Lives and works in Ghent
Charlotte Alice Martha Dossche is a full-time visual artist who creates both public art and studio-based work (oil on canvas and photographic work). In her practice, she explores the complex relationship between human identity and the concept of 'reality'. She operates from the conviction that these two themes are inextricably linked and continuously influence one another.
Charlotte's artistic vision is fueled by a hybrid background as an architect and engineer. On the one hand, she applies an architectural perspective to our physical living environment: she is fascinated by the way spatial interventions and natural contexts shape our thoughts, emotions, and behavior. On the other hand, her engineering mindset drives her to establish cross-pollinations with disciplines such as neuroscience, philosophy, and biology. These scientific angles provide the theoretical depth for her artistic research into perception.
In her public work, primarily (wall) paintings, this research culminates in the series 'Gemini'. Here, she explores a duality: the different realities a single individual can experience, versus the dialogue between separate individuals within the same context. Visually, this translates into deliberate compositions of faces, formed by an interplay of coloured planes. With Gemini, Charlotte Alice Martha invites the viewer to acknowledge the multiplicity of their own identity and to seek out the reflection with the 'other'.
Parallel to this public work, Charlotte develops the series 'Myopia' in the intimacy of her studio. In doing so, she examines the tension between painting and photography. Myopia functions as a conscious escape from the overstimulating digital world, in which we are daily flooded by fake images, algorithms, and spoon-fed realities. Through colourful photographic images and multi-layered oil paintings, she challenges the viewer to let go of the guided perception and rediscover the autonomy of their own vision.
With her artistic practice, Charlotte Alice Martha has already built a career, as evidenced by the many public and private (wall) paintings spread across Flanders and Brussels. A notable highlight was the collaboration with Amazone vzw in 2023: her painted tram for the project Walls to remember attracted a lot of attention and was given a spot on the Jan Hoet-square between the S.M.A.K. and the MSK in Ghent from 2025 onwards. In 2024, she collaborated with the Museum Dr. Guislain, where she created a live work during Museum Night, inspired by the museum's themes and the giants of Eric De Volder. In addition, she regularly participates in exhibitions, for example, she designed an exclusive skateboard for the Asfalt expo in the old Ghent library, which aligns with the Gemini series. Her work is included in various private collections.
