Walls to Remember (2023) is a collaborative project between Charlotte Alice Martha and Amazone vzw. Conceived as a large-scale public artwork on a tram vehicle, the project focusses on themes of feminine identity and perspective within the city of Ghent.

The women portrayed on the tram were selected following archival research into figures who have contributed significantly to women’s rights and feminist visibility in Ghent. Charlotte Alice Martha conducted research in collaboration with AMSAB and AVG-Carhif, engaging deeply with their archives. In addition, she reached out to women who are still living to conduct interviews and to further expand the network of names represented in the work.

The tram itself is owned by Gentspoort and functions as a travelling landmark within the urban landscape. As part of the broader Gentspoort development project, the vehicle announces the arrival of new tram infrastructure across various neighbourhoods. After remaining at Stapelplein in Ghent for two years, the tram continues its trajectory within the city centre. On 3 October 2025, it was relocated to Jan Hoetplein, in front of S.M.A.K., where it will remain for an indefinite period.

Through its mobility and prominent public presence, Walls to Remember brings feminine identity into everyday public space. The work highlights the real lives, experiences, and stories of women in Ghent and as such activates the city as both archive and exhibition space.
